Transporting boats measuring greater than standard dimensions usually involves additional permits and considerations. Boats over 8’6″ wide will require an oversize load permit for ground transport. A boat measuring over 12′ wide will need a certified escort, and interstate travel may be restricted.

While the manufacturing specs are usually correct, you should manually measure the overall length from bow to stern, overall height from the bottom of the keel to the highest non-removable part, and the beam, including the rub rails, before transport to verify the dimensions.

Roll-on/roll-off, or RO/RO shipping, is the most common way to transport a boat overseas, allowing the transportation of your boat while securely attached to its cradle or trailer. However, it can leave your boat vulnerable. Enclosed container shipping is a good option but impractical for oversize vessels, which may require a flat rack. In flat rack shipping, the boat remains secured in its cradle. The cradled boat is strapped into the flat rack and anchored to the shipping vessel. Sea-worthy boats may be loaded directly from the water.
